Make Money

What is Affiliate Marketing and How to Start?

Make Money with Affiliate MarketingHey guys! Welcome back! Today I’m talking about one of my favorite ways of making money online, and that is {drumroll}… affiliate marketing. So, hopefully you already have or had your beautiful hot cup of joe and your ready to take some notes to make some money.

I have dabbled in many different ways of making money online and while I have had some successes with the different methods, I’ll be sharing in other posts. I found that affliate marketing is my favorite because essentially I get to share products that I’m normally already using, would use if it fit my box (like if the product is for a male but I’m a female, etc), or plan to use when the time is appropriate. Also, affiliate marketing is a great way to create and build a passive income stream.

I’m a big fan of trying to simplify and/or maximize my income by taking advantage of my normal, everyday habits. I think it’s awesome to be able to refer someone to a legit product and be compensated for it on the backend.

I hear you… “well, what is affiliate marketing?” and I got you…

What is Affiliate Marketing and How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

You partner with a company that sells the products/services you would like to recommend to your audience. If and when your audience buy something using your affiliate link, you get a commission from the sale. There are different types of affiliate programs that Ill go over i another post, but this is the most common and what I do mostly.

Affiliate marketing is pretty simple to understand and in its simplest terms, using affiliate marketing as a blogger means:

  1. You write about a product or service.
  2. You link to it with a special tracking link in your blog post.
  3. When your readers click the link and make a purchase, you get a commission on the sale.

Easy right?! Yes, yes it is. Which is why it’s my favorite.

So for instance say, you’ve just finished this amazing book and you just have to tell some people. Well, do it! Write a post or email newsletter about how awesome the book is and why you enjoyed it, why you recommend it, the benefits and add a link, which for a book, it would probably be your amazon associate affiliate link.

You want your posts to be authentic so you should have really read it or used it and if not, really reviewed it and believe and trust it.

This is great if you don’t consider yourself a creative person, haven’t figured out what product you would like to create, or you just plain want to share great products with people to help them, you, and the company, win-wins everywhere! Essentially you make money online by leveraging the creativity of others.

Do You Need A Blog?

It is definitely possible to be a successful affiliate marketer without a blog! Let’s be honest, I think just about anything is possible if you believe it enough. You will always find atleast one supportive person in this world lol… but the great thing about this is that, there is a lot of information about making money with affiliate marketing without a blog or website. Actually I have and one of the resources that has helped me besides coutless hours of google was this ebook about using pinterest for affiliate marketing.

There are a number of ways to make money with affiliate marketing by using facebook, forums, youtube, pinterest, and a few others I know of. My main method has been pinterest. I think it’s better to pick one to focus in on, make it profitable, than move on to another traffic method.

While you can make money either way, it is highly recommended that you create a blog to have traffic flow and inceases chances of ceating a more residual, passive income. I found it also opens your possibilties to the affiliate programs you can partner to because your more “trusted”.

A lot of companies want to know that you are representing them well and not just randomly “spamming” there products. Also, as a blogger, it is nice to have  like a “home” to share all your favorite things and help others.

I believe having an online presence increases your income because eventually people can trust that you are a real person who’s not just pushing random products and disappearing.

With that being said, you can surely create an income without a blog, which is good if your newly creating a blog and is looking to have money coming in to help reinvest into your journey.

***Please keep in mind that not all affiliate programs allow you to promote there products without a blog or website, so make sure you read there terms to know there acceptable methods of promotion so you wont get banned or flagged.

If you do not have a blog yet and would like to know where to start… than I have a few steps to get you started. I also highly recommend you check out this site that is a wealth of information for affiliates…

Find Your Niche, Chose Your Niche

Before you even began to build a website, you need to decide what your niche or area of “expertise” is going to be. Don’t worry, you don’t really have to be an “expert” but you do want an area that your passionate about for whatever reason because you want to enjoy writing about it, researching it, and sharing it.

Some ideas of niches are health and wellness, wealth, personal finance, relationships, food, toys (yes toys! i’ve seen vey successful blogs about toys), beauty, etc. It’s so many and once you pick a group than you beak it down more… such as

Health and wellness can be broken down into fitness, weightloss, supplements and nutrition, workouts, dieting programs, etc. Each of the main niches above can be broken down into smaller niches.. so find your happy place.

This article goes into great details about choosing a niche.

I will say though, don’t get stuck here. This can feel like a hard decision because you may feel the pressure to “get it right” but you can’t really get it wrong in my opinion except for not starting to “get it right”. It’s better to make the best decision you can at that time and adjust as you go. You won’t know or grow unless you go and get started.

Build a Website

Now that you have an idea of what you want to talk about, next is building yourself a website, the most popular and the one I use is Now don’t get scared, it’s really easy these days with all these resources and website builders.

There are 2 steps to pulling your website together, choosing a domain and a hosting company.

1. Buy A Domain

The domain name is the web address that visitors use to find your posts, such as So you can’t get to far without this. If you have some names in mind, go here to check if there available.

There are several places you can go to purchase domain names but I highly recommend getting started with wealthy affiliates and setting up your domain there. WA have both a free account and paid account which I’ll talk about in another post, I have the paid version now and it’s well worth it. The reason I recommend them is because you’ll also get so much more to help you from beginning your blog to actually making money, click here to see some of what’s included in both the free and paid accounts.

The other place I would recommend is GoDaddy. I also have a domain with them and have had it for about 5 years and I have been very happy.

2. Purchase and Setup Hosting

Hosting is where your domain lives, what makes it available to be seen and visited. Hosting is very affordable these days and once again, if you have an account with Wealthy Affiliates they also provide hosting.

If you don’t have an account with wealthy affiliate it’s okay because hosting is still very affordable. The next place that I would highly recommend is Hostgator. I’ve had them for a very long time and never had any issues with them with my site going down or anything.

Here are a few very good options, that often have specials going on for new accounts:

Once your hosting is setup than you just need to install wordpress, which you would have instructions for doing and install your theme, which you’ll be given options for free themes.

Here are some additional resources for building your site that I recommend you taking a look at:

Than the fun part is creating content! I recommend creating up to 10 quality posts to start filling out your blog. If you joined Wealthy Affiliates than your following the free lessons and you would just go step by step through the process. They literally break every step down.

Whew! I know people sounds like a lot but really, what’s not these days?!? So I’ll give you a moment to reheat your coffee and/or refill it while we finish this out… just think guys, you are creating a PASSIVE INCOME STREAM!!! so surely this is beyond worth it.. right?!? Right!

How to Partner with Affiliate Programs

Ok, so now that you have your niche and did your due diligence on it, it’s time to connect with some affiliate networks. The best way I did this was to consider the topics I’m covering, first is it anything that I’m already using that I can check if they have an affiliate program. For instance, if my niche is finances and I plan to talk about my high-rate savings accounts, do they have an affiliate program?!

Than I recommend you signing up with these affiliate networks:

From here, your all set. Start making more content and recommending products naturally throughout your posts. To get the most out of affiliate marketing and really learn the best methods than I HIGHLY recommend you becoming apart of these 2 communities (Wealthy Affiliate and Affilorama) for free. They are both centered around making money with affiliate marketing with tons of both free and paid very valuable lessons.

Hopefully this post helped answer any questions you may have had. I know I’ve probably created more for you… ha! But hopefully this gives you a good base to start and/or consider affiliate marketing.

I’d love to hear from you so be sure to leave your comments below and thanks so much for visiting!
